In Anatomy and Physiology, students conducted a hands-on bone dissection to explore the anatomy and internal structure of bones. Using hacksaws, students carefully sawed real bones in half to observe both external and internal features.
On the outside, they identified structures such as the periosteum, compact bone, and overall shape of the bone. Once the bones were cut open, students examined the internal components, including the spongy bone and bone marrow cavities. They were able to distinguish between yellow marrow, which stores fat, and red marrow, which is responsible for producing blood cells.
This lab provided students with a deeper understanding of bone composition, structure, and function, reinforcing concepts of skeletal system physiology through direct observation and inquiry. Thank you to Mrs. Hartvigsen for providing such valuable hands-on experiences for the students at ALC.
